Crossing the Pond in LIMBO

LIMBO, released by the Danish folk over at Playdead all the way back in 2010 is one great game chucked full of hardcore obstacles. Yes, it exists only in Black and White. Yes, it is a 2D scroller. Yes, it is still kickass even after 2015.

If you think you're up for the challenge and you enjoy games like Portal 2 then this one is for you. The title is a trendsetter in many subtle ways and in other ways through its innovation it became on the console a 2D genre defining precursor to successful games like Mark of the Ninja and Outland. LIMBO deserves a spot in the collection and is a must try experience.

I don't know why it took me so long to finally try this title after having read a review over at Ars from back when. Today I put that behind me and gave the demo a run on that soon to be retired Xbox.

Oh Boy! It was fun. But Oh Man...it was frustrating.

After a few minutes in I thought I had it mastered, the controls are so simple everyone's girlfriend and mother can play without confusion. There I was on my way to demo conquering stardom.

Until I happened upon a pond...

LIMBO up on a pond

It took a long time to realize that the boy didn't have an affinity for water and really really couldn't swim. So it was, death by drowning a million and one times. I was stuck but the I got struck by a light bulb and in a moment of genius pulled the box out of the water and found a Rope, a Tree Limb and then a Collapsing Branch. TAH-DAH! Half the day gone and it was exhilarating :)

Now, happily on the other side it should be smooth sailing right? Yes, but then unfortunately I met this guy

LIMBO's mean arachnid

One big, ugly and very mean arachnid. Despite all my hard work and ingenuity, in the end I got mauled by the spider.

Ok, just one minor confession. That stroke of genius was actually me giving up on outsmarting the really brilliant creators and deciding that it was indeed time to bring in the big guns. Google ofcourse! Modern man's best friend. A friend that certainly came to my rescue today.

Who knows if it weren't for the powers of search I most probably would still be grasping for air and clinging on to wooden box for dear life. That's what happens when your character is faced with water and can't swim!!

Oh, and the light bulb that crashed into my head..that was actually this thing right here. No need to read the article as the relevant bit is in the below video.
